A study published by the Journal of Nutrition & Food Sciences shows TriNutra’s extract of Nigella sativa or black cumin seed oil, ThymoQuin 3%, had beneficial effects on metabolic function and fatty liver.

Nigella sativa seeds contain a high amount of thymoquinone, the main active within the seeds, which is a powerful antioxidant. This study aimed to examine how ThymoQuin 3%, a cold-pressed black cumin seed oil standardized to three percent thymoquinone, would affect high blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

“Thymoquinone is a potent antioxidant, however, there are many oils out there that are not offered in a therapeutic dose,” said Morris Zelkha, CEO of TriNutra. “This study revealed how significantly ThymoQuin 3% can positively affect metabolic health.”

The study followed male mice that were fed either a lean or high-fat diet for 20 weeks. The mice were divided into three groups of five: group 1) lean diet, group 2) high-fat diet, group 3) high-fat diet treated during the last eight weeks with ThymoQuin 3%. The study monitored inflammatory biomarkers, antioxidant biomarkers, mitochondrial biogenesis, tissue fat accumulation ,and hepatic steatosis. It concluded that ThymoQuin 3% indicated a potential clinical role to aid in obesity-related metabolic conditions.

“There are already more than 50 pre-clinical and clinical research trials demonstrating the efficacy and healing components of Nigella sativa oil, however, this study shows that ThymoQuin 3% can be an effective botanical to improve metabolic health,” said Chris Holland, vice president of sales at Barrington Nutritionals. “We are thrilled with the results of this study and look forward to helping formulators incorporate ThymoQuin 3% in their next healthy aging product.”
