Steven Smith, founder of Portland, OR-based Steven Smith Teamaker, has died of complications from liver cancer. The influential tea tastemaker was 65.
Mr. Smith was known for his work in the specialty tea market, and was the creator of Stash Tea, which he sold Yamamotoyama Tea Company in 1993; and Tazo Tea, which he sold to Starbucks in 1999.
His international travels were a source of inspiration for his products, and influenced the flavors and ingredients included in his collections.
An avid tea lover throughout his life, he began his passion for the drink as a child when he shared tea with his grandmother.
Kim Smith, Mr. Smith’s wife and co-founder, will continue her leadership within the company, which the pair founded in 2009. She has served as head of marketing, talent management and strategic planning for the company.
Tony Tellin, the company’s master tea blender, will continue to oversee product development and quality.
