In a recent study published in the peer-reviewed journal Nutrition, Wellmune WGP, a food supplement containing a refined 1,3/1,6 glucopolysaccharide that improves the antimicrobial activity of the innate immune cells by the priming of lectin sites, decreased the frequency and severity of upper
respiratory tract infection (URTI) symptoms during the peak URTI season. In a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial, 100 healthy individuals (ages 18–65) were randomized to 250 mg of Wellmune once daily, or to an identical rice flour-based placebo, over 90 days. Though the authors state further research is needed, they found that Wellmune tended to decrease the total number of days subjects suffered with URTI symptoms, and provided a significantly improved ability to “breathe easy” in the group taking the supplement.
