A special blend of lychee seeds and spices may help pre-diabetics dodge the full-blown disease, scientists believe. Researchers are trialing a modern formula of Chinese herbs and spices as a potential non-drug treatment for a very early sign of diabetes—raised blood sugar levels. The potion contains six extracts—including turmeric, a type of seaweed and seeds from lychee fruit—which Chinese developers say can help control blood sugar.
It was found to be successful in animals and lead researcher Suzanne Grant, from the University of Western Sydney, believes the blend—called Jiangtang Xiaozhi—could have similar success in humans. [Said Ms. Grant,] “While nothing can substitute for a balanced diet and exercise for overall good health, Jiangtang Xiaozhi may provide a new, more convenient way for people to avoid the condition.”
Researchers will recruit participants with the early stage condition (pre-diabetes) and prescribe half a daily dose of the herbal concoction. Their blood sugar, insulin levels and other physical health details will be carefully monitored throughout the trial.
