A new report from market analyst Datamonitor, London, U.K., reveals that sales of functional foods have rocketed in the U.S. They were worth just under $19 billion in 2004, and are predicted to increase by almost one-third to $25 billion in 2009. However, the report points out that food manufacturers still face a major challenge in convincing consumers of the credibility of their products, with 45% of Americans saying that they largely or entirely disbelieve food and drink manufacturers’ health claims. Datamonitor claims that unless companies make labeling clearer and more believable, consumers will not be persuaded to make the switch to functional foods and drinks.
