Supplementing with annatto-derived tocotrienols branded as DeltaGold by American River Nutrition was linked with a significant reduction of miRNAs related to inflammation and liver cell death in a group of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The data was gathered in a study conducted at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Pakistan, which was published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
NAFLD occurs when excess fat is stored in the liver, and is most commonly associated with overweight, obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, and affects an estimated 80-100 million adults in the U.S., according to Mayo Clinic. This can transition to the more serious condition non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The American Liver Foundation estimates that about 30 million Americans progress to NASH yearly.
In a 48-week randomized, double-blind, active-controlled trial, 100 participants were administered either DeltaGold tocotrienols or alpha-tocopherols at dosages of 600 mg/day and 536 mg/day respectively, which led to decreased biochemical levels and metabolic factors associated with steatosis (fatty liver disease) and pre-fibrosis. However, greater clinical efficacy was observed in the tocotrienol form of vitamin E, compared to tocopherols. All patients were advised to take part in lifestyle modifications, which involved regular physical activity and a reduced-fat and reduced-carbohydrate diet.
The authors concluded that the miRNA data provide evidence that delta-tocotrienols may act as an anti-fatty liver agent. After evaluating patients for six miRNAs which are highly significant in relation to 10 NAFLD indications, “Delta-tocotrienol exerts a more pronounced effect than alpha-tocopherol in reducing miR-375 and miR-34a, which are linked to the regulation of inflammation and apoptosis,” the authors concluded.
MiRNAs are guide molecules that regulate gene control of physiologic functions, or dysfunctions such as metabolic diseases and liver conditions. This study was the first to report on circulating miRNAs in NAFLD patients supplemented with annatto tocotrienol or alpha-tocopherol, according to American River Nutrition.
