Herbal Supplement Linked to Liver Function Benefits

A six-extract blend called KaraLiv reduced elevated liver enzymes in 60 participants in less than 30 days.

A blend of herbal extracts, including Momordica charantia, Phyllanthus niruri, Andrographis paniculata, Brassica rapa, Asparagus racemosus, and Zingiber officinale, was associated with reductions in elevated liver enzymes in a recently-published study which appears in the International Journal of Basic & Clinical Pharmacology.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial involving 60 participants with mild to moderately elevated liver enzymes, the authors of the study administered a 1,000 mg dose of the supplement marketed by Karallief called KaraLiv, or a placebo, to the participants for a period of 56 days.

By the end of the study period, the KaraLiv group experienced 40% reductions in ALT compared to a 19% reduction in the placebo group, which is linked to improved protein metabolism.

The experimental group also saw a 53% reduction in AST levels in the blood compared to a 24% reduction in the placebo group, an indicator of reduced organ damage.

The KaraLiv group saw a 20% reduction in serum bilirubin levels compared to a 12% reduction in the placebo group – Bilirubin is a waste generated when red blood cells are broken down, and cannot be cleared as effectively when the liver is damaged.

Significant (27%) reductions were achieved in MDA levels for the KaraLiv group compared to placebo group (0.6%), which indicates a reduction in oxidative stress which can occur when a liver malfunctions.

20% increases, on average, were achieved in SOD levels compared to a 0.9% increase in the placebo group. SOD is an enzyme which reduces oxidative stress. Lastly, the KaraLiv group saw a 21% reduction in GGT levels compared to a 4.5% reduction in the placebo group. GGT is an enzyme which is involved in the metabolism of glutathione, an antioxidant, and while GGT is mainly found in the liver, it can leak into the blood when the liver is impaired.

The authors of the study said that KaraLiv demonstrated a “hepato-protective functionality,’ without altering any other vital signs or blood parameters, indicating that it is a safe treatment option, pending further studies with larger populations to substantiate the findings.

“We’re very excited about these study findings, which clearly demonstrate KaraLiv’s safety and efficacy and how this supplement can have a tangible benefit on overall liver support,” Krishna Rajendran, CEO of Karallief, said. “A healthy liver is essential for a good quality of life, because it maintains healthy blood sugar levels and creates critical nutrients the body needs. And yet there have not been many supplements with herbal ingredients that havegone through such rigorous clinical trials, until now.”
