TriNutra, the supplier of a proprietary black seed (Nigella sativa) oil standardized to 3% thymoquinone, announced the publication of a study on the benefits of ThymoQuin when combined with icosapent ethyl, a highly-purified, pharmaceutical-grade Omega-3 oil.
The Nigella sativa seeds used in ThymoQuin contain a high amount of thymoquinone, a bioactive constituent which exhibits powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The most recent clinical study, published in the MDPI journal Antioxidants, tested the effects of ThymoQuin when used in combination with omega-3, to evaluate the potential influence on obesity-related inflammation, insulin resistance, and the metabolism of adipose tissue browning in mice.
The authors of the study observed that the combination of ThymoQuin and omega-3s attenuated the markers of obesity and insulin resistance by reducing adipocyte hypertrophy-induced inflammation, enhancing the activation of AMPK (an enzyme that plays a role in cellular energy homeostasis), enhancing fatty acid metabolism and mitochondrial function, and reprogramming adipocytes from white to beige, which is associated with improved energy metabolism.
“Browning of white to beige fat takes on a multiocular lipid droplet appearance and increases inergy expenditure and metabolic activity[…]” The authors wrote. “These beneficial effects appear to be associated with the activation of AMPK signaling cascades.”
“In conclusion, this current study shows the remarkable effect of thymoquinone in combination with the purified form of Omega-3, icosapent ethyl, in the browning of WAT [white adipose tissue]. This combination is very effective in the browning of WAT and is likely safer than anything currently on the market. This novel discovery needs to be confirmed in human clinical trials,” the authors concluded.
“Obesity creates excess fat which then may create excess inflammation,” Nader Abraham, the New York Medical College Professor who ran the study, said. “The uniqueness of this omega-3 and ThymoQuin combination creates Omega 3 Forte [Omega-3 with vitamin E content], which can fight efficiently against fat inflammation by converting inflammation fat to healthy fat and drastically improves insulin sensitivity. Then the outcome is improved fatty liver and blood glucose and pressure return to the normal range.”
