Obesity is an epidemic with far-reaching implications for public health. Statistics vary based on the source of data, demographics and time period assessed, but the American Heart Association recently estimated that 168 million people are overweight and 74 million are obese in the U.S. According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the prevalence of obesity was 39.8% in adults and 18.5% in youths in 2015-2016.
Globally, in 2017 the New England Journal of Medicine published a review of data for 195 countries and territories from 1980 through 2015. Researchers reported about 2 billion people worldwide, or about 30% of the global population, are overweight or obese.
The implications of obesity on health and systems of care are burdensome. Obesity-related health conditions like heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer are some of the leading causes of preventable, premature death. The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. was $147 billion in 2008 U.S. dollars, according to CDC data.
