A study entitled “A Dietary Supplement Containing Standardized Phaseolus vulgaris Extract Influences Body Composition of Overweight Men and Women” was published in the January 2007 issue of the International Journal of Medical Sciences. Pharmachem Laboratories, Inc. is the maker of Phase 2, an extract of the white bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), which was used in the study.
The double-blind study involved 60 healthy human volunteers, both males and females, ranging in age from 20-45 years old. The participants were selected based on being anywhere from 5 to 15 kg overweight for at least 6 months. Participants were divided into two groups of 30, with one group receiving a placebo and the other receiving the placebo plus 500 mg of Phase 2 in a product called Blockal.
Participants in the study lost an average of 6.45-lbs. in 30 days when they consumed Phase 2. Participants on the placebo lost less than 1-lb., on average. In addition, participants on Phase 2 lost over 10% of body fat mass, 1.4% in hip circumference, 1.4% in thigh circumference, and 3.4% in waist circumference. These losses were experienced without any loss of lean body mass.
