Zinc will be in high demand this winter, according to Gadot Biochemical Industries, an Israel-based supplier of minerals for dietary supplements and functional foods.
Ohad Cohen, Gadot’s chief executive officer notes that the company is prepared to meet high demand when immune products are in-season, following massive growth in sales at the end of 2022’s second quarter.
“Zinc sales are skyrocketing for immunity purposes. New products launched in the last five years in the healthcare category have increased by more than 68%, according to a well-known global marketing research firm,” Cohen said. “Zinc is a perfect match for botanical and plant-based formulations since the ingredient offers abundant health benefits and scientific claims. And we do not have supply chain issues.”
Cohen made note of other market research metrics, reporting that plant-based ingredient formulations with zinc increased 600% in launches, and launches of herbal/botanical products with zinc have grown 500%.
New product launches containing zinc are growing across the globe, with 190 new product launches in Europe, and 48 in North America. “The body of research validating zinc’s role in immune health supports its critical role in dietary supplementation that targets overall healthy resistance that consumers seek during the winter months,” Cohen said.
Zinc has been evidenced to have a role in immunity through a number of different mechanisms – it supports the normal development and function of cells that mediate immune response, neutrophils, natural killer cells, and macrophages. It also modulates oxidative stress and can inhibit inflammatory cytokines, and, when zinc deficiency is present, it results in impaired phagocytosis, intracellular killing, and cytokine production.
Further, zinc is necessary to support neurosensory performance, lean body mass, proper growth in children, bone morphology, cognitive function, and skin and nail structure. According to the European Food Safety Authority, approved claims around zinc are diverse, and it can be marketed with claims around metabolism of fatty acids, joint health, cardiovascular function, prostate and thyroid function, vitamin A metabolism, eye health, and protection from oxidative damage.
