DHA And ARA Supplemented Infant Formulas To Launch In U.S.
In the coming months several companies will be launching the first infant formulas enriched with DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA (arachidonic acid) into the U.S. market. While formulas supplemented with these polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been available in more than 60 countries for several years, this is the first time FDA has approved their use for this purpose. The first company to launch an infant formula product supplemented with the aforementioned components is Mead Johnson Nutritionals, Evansville, IN. Mead Johnson is introducing its new infant formula supplemented with a proprietary formula of DHA and ARA oils produced by Martek Biosciences, Columbia, MD. The new product, Enfamil LIPIL™, was slated to hit store shelves in February.
In related news, plans are also underway at the Ross Products Division of Abbott Laboratories, Columbus, OH, to launch an infant formula with Martek’s DHA and ARA oils. The U.S. launch is set to take place early this year.
