Four new snacks from Amplify contend with counterparts which don't boast the same natural, nutritionally-sound ingredients, according to the company.
Though Natural Products Expo West was postponed out of fears related to the novel coronavirus, many companies are debuting new products virtually to make up for the lost showcase experience. Amplify Snack Brands, a company which was purchased by Hershey in 2017, was set to debut the latest in its line of better-for-you salty snacks during the event in Anaheim, CA. Its rundown for this year’s demos of nutritionally-sound snack products included two new types of SkinnyPop products, a new innovation in the Pirate’s Booty line, as well as Krave, a plant-based jerky alternative.
Krave Plant-Based Jerky was recently developed as a response to widespread demand for plant-based alternatives to the wide variety of meat and dairy products sourced from animals. Following a clear lack of plant-based alternatives in the jerky category, Krave aims to win consumers over with two varieties of vegan jerky packed with proteins sourced from peas and fava beans. The two flavors are Korean BBQ and Smoked Chipotle. “The plant-based movement has yet to hit jerky because current options do not deliver on consumers’ expectations,” Jimmy McCain, Krave brand manager, said. “However, we recognized that the plant-based movement wasn’t off-limits to Krave and actually presented an opportunity to showcase our brand’s innovation.”
SkinnyPop now has chips made entirely out of popcorn. These chips are made with whole grains, and no artificial ingredients. The three varieties come in Sea Salt, BBQ, and Cheddar & Sour Cream flavors, and are Non-GMO Project Verified, gluten free, tree nut free, dairy free, vegan, and kosher. “With 90% of consumers snacking multiple times per day, chips are often seen as ‘off-limits’ for those trying to snack healthier,” Mark Chu, SkinnyPop brand manager said. “This insight is why we believe SkinnyPop will be a product people will love—it offers the delicious taste of chips paired with the better-for-you credentials of SkinnyPop.”
Also on the SkinnyPop docket is a new popcorn flavor: Twist of Lime. According to SkinnyPop, Lime is the third fastest growing flavor in Salty Snacks but has been underdeveloped in popcorn. Amplify saw this flavor’s popularity as an opportunity to grow its snacking profile and introduced a refreshing twist of lime. The innovation paid off, with 62% of SkinnyPop consumers saying that Twist of Lime will be an incremental purchase. “At Amplify, we’re all about snacking innovation,” said Chu. “So, when we saw lime’s growth as a popular flavor with consumers of Salty Snacks, we knew we had the opportunity to create something our fans would love. We’re constantly looking to develop new flavors to make snacking even more exciting.”
Pirate’s Booty Veggie Sticks promise to be a cut above the competition. According to Amplify, Pirate’s Booty is the only brand to put veggie sticks on the market that actually contain a half-cup of vegetables in every serving. “Many brands use fried potato starch to make their veggie sticks and then color them with veggie powders, but Pirate’s Booty Veggie Sticks are baked with actual vegetables including corn, navy beans, potatoes, lentils, beets, spinach, and kale,” said Danielle Merket, brand manager, Pirate’s Booty. “As a brand that prides itself on providing healthier, filling snack alternatives, our veggie and fruit sticks certainly embody this commitment. We’re glad kids love them as much as we do.”
