Frutarom Health BU will introduce CitrOlive, a patented natural ingredient that combines a synergetic action of a unique formulation of olive and citrus extracts backed by extensive research of key phytochemicals, polyphenols and flavonoids, at Booth L137.
CitrOlive supports overall cardiovascular health and protects against the hardening of the arteries, the underlying cause of most heart problems. The benefits of CitrOlive result from its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. It is water-soluble and can be combined in functional food and drinks, dietary supplements and nutrition bars.
“CitrOlive is an important addition to our Mediterranean ingredients line,” said Yannick Capelle, product manager for Frutarom Health. “It reflects our mission to explore the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet and provide pure, safe ingredients backed by solid scientific research.”
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial performed at Murcia University (UCAM), Spain, subjects received 500 mg/day of CitrOlive or matching placebo for a period of 90 days. The results showed a significant drop in triglycerides and oxidized LDL levels—both considered prominent risk factors for cardiovascular disorders—versus the placebo. Moreover, acute toxicity studies have demonstrated the safety of the product, even when ingested in high doses.
“The Mediterranean Diet, with its abundant use of olive oil, has long been considered the gold standard for a healthy, nutritious diet and for decades has been clinically associated with a reduced risk for cardiovascular problems,” said Capelle. “CitrOlive is an innovative and natural ingredient that delivers the phytonutrients of the Mediterranean Diet in a concentrated form.
Your Ticket to the Mediterranean
In addition to CitrOlive, the company will showcase its line-up of innovative natural extracts that reflect the ancient wisdom of the Mediterranean tradition and the company’s strengths in science and supplement/food safety.
“Following the success of our NutraT product line this year at Vitafoods, Geneva, we decided to debut it in the U.S. market,” stated Maria Dolores Garcia, product manager for Frutarom Health. “This new range of innovative formulations, provided in powder form to dissolve instantly in water and other beverages, is designed to provide all the benefits of a healthy Mediterranean diet.”
The recent observational Moli-sani study, presented last August at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) conference in Rome, strengthens decades of science supporting that eating a Mediterranean diet could be extremely beneficial for patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, including helping them to live longer.
With the acquisition last year of Nutrafur SA, Spain, Frutarom Health extended its product portfolio to include Mediterranean ingredients with widely acknowledged “wellness” reputations. Sourcing raw materials derived from a natural palette ranging from grapefruit over purslane to olive leaf, olive fruit and oranges (bitter and sweet), Nutrafur’s scientists create premium, highly effective products such as the aforementioned NutraT line suitable for use in instant drink mixes.
“Millennials are seeking healthy ingredients that can inspire and infuse their healthy beverage choices,” noted Garcia. “We will exhibit naturally colored and flavored beverages at the Frutarom booth. These drinks are designed to deliver refreshing flavor plus functionality, thanks to formulations rich in Mediterranean bioactives ingredients, including, the clinically supported, Portusana.”
Visitors to Frutarom’s booth also can learn about the company’s proprietary HyperPure technology, which processes botanical ingredients to preserve their bioactivity and health benefits. This sustainable, “eco-green” method not only maintains the health impact of natural active ingredients, it improves their solubility, too. “Using the process, we can guarantee pure and safe ingredients, without compromising potency or bioactivity,” said Matthias Kreuter, PhD, CSO for Frutarom. “For today’s consumer, it’s all about trust and transparency. They’re actively seeking healthful products with proven health benefits, while insisting on the impeccable safety of those items.”
