A new report from ConsumerLab.com, White Plains, NY, found most nutrition powders, shakes and drinks it tested met their nutrient claims, with the exception of three products—two sports drinks and a meal supplement that contained more cholesterol than claimed. This recent report provides test results for 22 products, including those for meal-replacement, sports endurance/ recovery, bodybuilding and dieting. “What sets these products apart from other types of drinks is protein, about 10 to 50 grams per serving,” said Tod Cooperman, MD, president of ConsumerLab.com. Adults need about 60 grams of protein per day and more if physically active. “People are increasingly turning to nutritional drinks because they are more convenient than eating meat, eggs, and dairy and generally provide less saturated fat and cholesterol,” he said.
