High Genistein Supplement Effective in Reducing
Hot Flashes
In 2005, a group of scientists undertook a critical review of published studies that looked at isoflavone extracts and their effectiveness in reducing frequency or severity of menopausal symptoms. Previous reviews had yielded mixed results about whether isoflavone extracts reduced menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes. For the new research, scientists re-evaluated the findings of published studies and analyzed the results according to the type of isoflavone extract used in each study. The results showed that higher genistein supplements, like Novasoy soy isoflavones from ADM, were effective in providing relief from the severity and frequency of hot flashes.
The researchers narrowed the literature to 11 scientifically, well-qualified studies where the source and isoflavone identity could be determined. This provided detailed information on the isoflavone extracts used in the research.
In five of the studies, the isoflavones were from whole soybean-like extracts and provided more than 15 mg genistein (a soy isoflavone subtype) per day. These five studies consistently reported a statistically significant effect in reducing hot flashes. Of the remaining studies, five reported no statistically significant reduction in hot flashes.
Based on findings of the critical review, researchers concluded that not all soy isoflavones are equally effective in reducing menopausal hot flashes. Extracts containing higher genistein levels with a minimum genistein dose are effective in reducing hot flashes. Researchers also called for future studies to identify and correlate the type of the isoflavones for effectiveness rather than assume all isoflavone subtypes are equally effective.

Cinnulin PF Provides Antioxidant Support for People with Impaired Fasting Blood Sugar
A new study has demonstrated that Cinnulin PF, a proprietary cinnamon extract from Integrity Nutraceuticals International, may provide protective antioxidant effects in reducing oxidative stress associated with the metabolic syndrome that is linked with early signs of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The study also showed improved blood glucose control and enhanced body composition with the extract. These results further add to the growing body of research supporting the active compounds in cinnamon’s role in helping to improve insulin sensitivity in people with impaired fasting blood sugar levels.
The placebo-controlled, double-blind study was New Study Identifies 7-Hydroxymatairesinol as Key Lignan in Food Sources
Linnea, the exclusive supplier of HMRlignan, revealed new Finnish research at the SupplySide West show in Las Vegas, which showed 7-hydroxymatairesinol to be the dominant lignan in wheat, triticale, barley, corn, amaranth, millet and oat bran.
The study, titled “Identification of 7-hydroxymatairesinol and several other previously unidentified lignans in cereals, oilseeds and nuts—the role of extraction method,” by Smeds, AI, et al. Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacy, Abo Akademi University, detailed how a new analytical technique was able to reveal, for the first time, the presence of the compound 7-hydroxymatairesinol in a variety of food sources. Prior to the results of this research, the lignan was known to be found in Norway spruce (Picea abies), which still remains the most potent, and hence economically viable source for application in dietary supplements and functional foods.

Hyal-Joint Improves Quality of Life in
Osteoarthritis Patients
Results of a recent clinical trial suggest that Bioiberica’s Hyal-Joint can help patients with osteoarthritis of the knee achieve physical and emotional improvements, therefore improving their quality of life. Hyal-Joint stimulates endogenous synthesis of hyaluronic acid, promoting anti-inflammatory activity and intestinal absorption, and providing a high level of safety. This is the first time an oral of hyaluronic acid has been tested in humans.
The objective of the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was to determine the comparative differences between Hyal-Joint and placebo in overall pain relief and quality of life, and to determine the change in both health parameters using the SF-36v2 and WOMAC scales. During the clinical trial, 20 patients (9 adult males and 11 adult females), aged 40 and over, with clinical diagnosis of osteoarthritis of the knee(s), but who were otherwise in good health, were randomly assigned to receive either 80 mg of Hyal-Joint or a placebo for two months. SF-36v2 and WOMAC scales were used after the two months of treatments to evaluate the patient’s quality of life and general status from different perspectives such as physical condition, bodily pain, emotional status, as well as function and mobility.
The results in the quality-of-life test concluded that there was a general trend for all SF-36v2 scores to increase in the Hyal-Joint group over the course of the trial. There was a 33% improvement in the bodily-pain score in the Hyal-Joint group versu
