A committee of health and dietary supplement experts should be created in New York State to evaluate the benefits and risks of the use of dietary supplements, the state Task Force on Life and Law suggested in a recent report. The task force said while dietary supplements are a billion-dollar industry in the U.S., the effects of the substances on the human body are not understood in many cases and only partly understood in others. If a special committee is formed to look into supplements in New York, the task force said it should consider requiring the application of warning labels on the supplements known to put users at risk of health problems, such as liver damage. The task force said the committee on supplements should also consider putting the onus on the supplement industry to report to consumers on the potentially adverse health effects of their products.
