The European Union (EU) Commission has granted ADM, Decatur, IL, Novel Foods authorization (pursuant to 258/97/EC Novel Foods regulation) for use of plant-derived sterols and sterol esters in specified food products. With this approval, ADM’s customers may now use plant-derived sterols and sterol esters in products, such as salad dressings, including mayonnaise; milk type products, such as semi and skimmed milks, which may incorporate fruits and/or cereals; yellow fat spreads and fermented milk products, such as yogurt, soy drinks and cheese type products (in which the milk fat or protein has been partially replaced by vegetable fat or protein). To meet these strict regulations for Novel Foods, ADM submitted a comprehensive dossier, which thoroughly detailed safety studies, use levels, manufacturing processes and cholesterol lowering benefits of the product, for evaluation by authorities in each of the EU member states.
