The University of Leicester, based in the U.K., has been selected as one of the first centers in the world to trial a new cancer prevention drug based on a natural compound found in red wine. Cancer researchers from the University of Leicester’s department of oncology have been awarded just over $1.5 million along with the University of Michigan. The award comes from the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) and represents the first time that a group outside the U.S. has been funded by NCI for the early clinical development of a drug that may prevent cancer. The money will be used by the Cancer Biomarker and Prevention Group of the University of Leicester, in conjunction with the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Michigan, to conduct pre-clinical and clinical evaluation of resveratrol.
