It is the potential for dehydration on long flights which increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), causing blood clots to form in the legs. DVT increases the risk of pulmonary embolism, a potentially deadly condition that occurs when a blood clot lodges in the lungs. Researchers noted that in a long flight simulation the reduction of plasma volume (PV) observed during 10 hours of confinement in a chamber was achieved by an intake of an isotonic-electrolyte solution. Researchers noted that a combination of electrolytes and carbohydrates could further enhance hydration in this situation…

People who drink moderate amounts of alcohol may be less likely to develop blockages in the arteries that supply blood to the legs…A study of almost 4000 people, all aged 55 years old or older, found that women and non-smoking men who had one or two drinks each day were less likely than non-drinkers to have peripheral artery disease (PAD). The strongest effect in this study was on women who did not smoke and consumed more than 20 grams of alcohol per day (two glasses of wine). These women were 59% less likely to have PAD than those who did not drink on a daily basis…
