Beneo has expanded its portfolio of fibers with Orafti β-fit, a whole-grain barley flour standardized to 20% beta-glucans content.
As a more sustainable source of fiber, its high beta-glucans content allows for qualified health claims surrounding cardiovascular support at lower inclusion levels than other types of fibers. The ingredient is locally produced in the U.S. and is offered globally. The production of the ingredient produces zero waste, and with the ingredient being upcycled, requires zero water input.
Beneo showcased the capabilities of Orafti β-fit by including it in waffle samples, along with a variety of toppings which showcased a wider range of functional food applications.
Citing HealthFocus International, half of consumers in the U.S. are extremely or very concerned about heart health issues while one in five consumers are personally affected by issues like cholesterol or hypertension. Barley beta-glucans can enable approved, front-of-pack communication for consumers looking to choose products to support their heart health.
“Beneo is excited to be extending its funciotnal fiber range with the launch of Orafti β-fit. This whole grain and clean label barley flour strengthens Beneo’s expertise as a leading provider of functional fibers,” said Jon Peters, Beneo’s sales director, Americas. “Orafti β-fit is perfectly aligned with the company’s goal to connect nutrition and health. It delivers convincing benefits with FDA-approved health claims. Orafti β-fit, as an economically-attractive solution, supports food manufacturers in developing tasty and appealing products with added value in times of tighter consumer budgets.”
Beta-glucans are viscous soluble dietary fibers that make food thicker and delay passage through the large and small intestines. Only cereal beta-glucans are approved for health claims in the U.S. and Europe, and are supported for cardiovascular health applications by over 120 scientific studies, Beneo reports. In particular, barley beta-glucans are evidenced to contribute to a lower blood glucose response, and impact both short- and long-term blood cholesterol levels.
Orafti β-fit is suitable for fiber enrichment, helping to bridge the fiber gap. It can be used in baked goods, pasta, cereals, and meal replacements, and can improve textures by increasing viscosity, which is suitable for dairy alternatives.
