According to its 2013-2014 Wastewater Statement preview from Los Angeles County, BI Nutraceuticals, Long Beach, CA, has significantly reduced its annual water consumption and the company is on track to save nearly 2.5 million gallons of water year-over-year. This significant reduction in water usage was attributed to several factors both big and small including the addition of a more efficient steam sterilization unit, retrofitting existing steam units to make them greener and adjustments to BI’s irrigation schedule.
“Availability of water is always a concern and this year’s drought in Southern California only further motivated us to evaluate our water usage and look for ways to reduce our consumption,” noted George Pontiakos, president and CEO, BI Nutraceuticals. “We are proud to have taken this important step and are evaluating other ways we can improve our processes to make them more green.”
In 1972, Los Angeles County’s Sanitation District Boards of Directors first adopted the Wastewater Ordinance. The Wastewater Ordinance helped to establish controls on users of the Sanitation Districts' sewerage system to protect the environment and public health, and to provide for the maximum beneficial use of the Sanitation Districts' facilities.
