Pureture, a biotechnology company specializing in alternatives to animal-based products, has partnered with Namyang Dairy Products, a South Korean food and dairy manufacturer, to incorporate yeast-derived casein into new, fully plant/yeast-based offerings.
“Our mission at Pureture is to develop technologies and further foods that will contribute to a more sustainable future, and we couldn’t be prouder to partner with Namyang with this breakthrough protein, working closely with them as they grow their plant-based offering,” said Rudy Yoo, founder and CEO of Pureture.
Pureture created the world’s first yeast-derived, plant-based casein, which offers both the same functionality and protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) as milk. Casein is used to create stable emulsions, preventing fat and water from separating, and is responsible for milk’s smooth texture.
Pureture’s casein is also suitable for clean label formulations, as it doesn’t require any additives, and is priced competitively compared to traditional milk-derived casein. The brand will have the manufacturing capacity of 2,400 tons to supply the demand it is receiving thus far.
“At Namyang, we’re aiming to make strides toward the future, as well as learn and grow with the dairy industry,” said Myko Kihyun Nam, CMO at Namyang Dairy Products. “We’ve had our eyes on the plant-based industry for a while, but knew we needed the right ingredients. With Pureture and its casein, which mimic traditional milk’s taste, texture, and functionality, we’ve found the perfect partner for our growth into the category. With the partnership with Pureture, we will now be able to offer dairy-free, 100% plant-based products without any sacrifice from the consumers regarding taste, nutrition, and cost.”
Pureture is finalizing its seed round with the goal of raising $12 million. Funds secured will be used to build manufacturing facilities, and develop Pureture’s brand.
