Chile-based supplement company Nutrartis has launched Cardiosmile, a plant sterol supplement in a liquid sachet format, in the U.S. market. The water-dispersible plant sterols are formulated to serve as a convenient way to support cardiovascular health which can be added to water, foods, and beverages.
"Cardiosmile is based on years of dedicated research. Its clinical effectiveness lies in its unique ability to markedly reduce cholesterol absorption,” said Gonzalo Vega, chief business officer and technical director at Nutrartis. “By furnishing a convenient, readily used form of plant sterols, Cardiosmile supports heart and metabolic health on a systemic level, facilitating the maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels."
The liquid format eliminates the need for pills, and its neutral taste and liquid dispersibility allows for consumers to mix it with foods, beverages, condiments, and more.
The product was the subject of a study conducted at the University of Manitoba in Canada, which linked 28 days of daily use to an average reduction in LDL cholesterol by 12% and triglycerides by 14%. The differences were achieved in a total of 47 mild-to-moderately hypercholesterolemic individuals.
Another study published in Nutrients linked supplementation with a reduction in waist circumference in metabolic syndrome patients, which the authors posited was linked to the corresponding changes in fatty acid and cholesterol metabolism. In 202 participants with metabolic syndrome who had similar measurements at baseline, the proportion of participants with high triglycerides was 15.65% lower in the treatment group, and the treatment group decreased their waist circumference by four centimeters, with no changes in the placebo group, at 24 weeks.
Plant sterols are theorized to work by inhibiting cholesterol absorption due to the sterols’ similarities to cholesterol in chemical structure, allowing them to out-compete cholesterol for absorption in the digestive tract. According to Nutrartis, the liquid format offers superior absorption advantages compared to tablet or capsule format.
“Cardiosmile's innovative formula responds to the evolving needs of health-conscious individuals, offering unparalleled convenience in heart health management. Its liquid format eliminates the complexity of pill consumption, and with its neutral taste it seamlessly integrates into daily routines. By providing a hassle-free solution, Cardiosmile empowers individuals to take charge of their heart health with ease and confidence,” said Sam Wiley, owner of SkySail, the U.S. distributor of Cardiosmile.
Each serving of Cardiosmile contains 1.4 grams of beta-sitosterol, and two grams of total plant sterols. Nutrartis sources its sterols from pine trees, and guarantees that the supplement is vegan, contains no preservatives, is non-GMO, gluten-, sugar-, sodium-, and lactose-free.
