A study on CognoLipid, a branded ingredient by Lipogen which contains phosphatidylserine (PS) and phosphatidic acid (PA), was one of ten studies to receive validation from a team of neurologists which conducted a systematic review of 1,380 studies on supplements’ effects on cognitive function. The review was published in Cureus.
The review, which consisted of randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, included a 2014 study on Cognolipid which met the research criteria and provided positive outcomes in domains of cognition. Phostphatidylserine is a phospholipid found within the brain, which is implicated in memory and proper nerve cell function. Phosphatidic acid is important in cell signaling, membrane curvature, and metabolic regulation in the brain.
The trial reviewed consisted of two studies which assessed Cognolipid on several domains of cognitive function.
The first study, according to the review authors, found that the PS and PA combination treatment was linked to significant improvements in Wechsler Memory Scale and List of Depression Symptoms Scale indices compared to placebo, in a population of functioning elderly participants. The second study looked at the influence of supplementation via differences achieved in Activities of Daily Life scores and other domains of deterioration and stability, including Alzheimer’s disease pathology, in a group of elderly participants diagnosed with AD.
“The fact that an independent health professional team deems our ingredients and its supportive research to be valuable for supporting brain/cognitive health is a powerful endorsement,” said Ilan Perry, co-owner of Lipogen. “Supplementing with CognoLipid from Lipogen may help product formulators offer consumers of all ages an opportunity to enjoy better brain performance.”
