Ingredient supplier BGG World and its subsidiary Algae Health Sciences (AHS) have published a list of 1,200 studies substantiating the health benefits of supplementation with the algae based carotenoid astaxanthin.
The document is available to all BGG customers and non-customers alike by emailing support@bggworld.com. It is designed with the intent to support and further both industry and consumer knowledge of ten clinically-supported health benefits of astaxanthin, along with other more emerging health benefits covered by research to date.
136 human clinical trials included in the study demonstrate efficacious results from astaxanthin supplementation in areas of eye and brain health, skin health and beauty from within, joint and tendon health, sports nutrition, endurance, energy, immune support, cardiovascular health, reproductive and hormonal health, antioxidant protection, and anti-aging. For each of the aforementioned health areas, a minimum of five human clinical trials have been published, the company reports.
600 pre-clinical trials, conducted on animals and in in vitro settings corroborate and expand upon the mechanisms of the aforementioned health benefits. An additional 300 studies in some of the more emerging areas of medical research cover astaxanthin’s potential role in liver and kidney health, glucose management, respiratory health, gastrointestinal health, and support for healthy cell lines.
“This comprehensive list is truly impressive,” Yanmei Li, PhD, chief scientific officer for BGG Global, said. “The clinical evidence for Astaxanthin to assist in ten distinct areas of health concerns has reached critical mass. And it’s particularly noteworthy that more than 100 publications are appearing every year on average over the last several years substantiating these health benefits and investigating new ways that astaxanthin can positively impact human health and nutrition.”
