Health and wellness brand Forest Remedies has launched gummy supplements containing ahiflower oil from Nature’s Crops International (NCI), which manufactures specialty oils for nutrition and personal care applications.
Ahiflower is a regeneratively grown alternative to fish and flax oils, and provides omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids, and associated health benefits.
The Multi Omega 3-6-9 Ahiflower Oil is formulated to support heart, brain, skin, and joint health, and provides a broad profile of omegas which the company reports to be more effective than flaxseed oil. They are available as vegan gummies or vegan soft gels.
The Elderberry Immune Multi Omega 3-6-9 + Ahiflower Oil is formulated to provide additional immune and wellness support. The ahiflower oil is combined with a purified elderberry extract, which is rich in antioxidants and vitamins, to support the immune system and general health and wellness.
Gummies have historically presented a number of processing challenges as a vehicle for delivering oils high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Natural oxidation can lead products to imbue a perceptible rancidity and off-putting tastes. Developments in formulation, blending, and processing can help to minimize oxidation and allow for stable dosages and flavor profiles, and these developments have allowed the company to be the first to bring ahiflower gummies to the market.
NCI reports that it can produce as much omega-rich oils as 320,000 anchovies in an acre of ahiflower harvest, and is fully traceable through the company’s Crop Assured 365 system. The company also utilizes biodegradable, plastic-free recycled paperboard and eco-sourced wood cellulose fibers for packaging.
Nature’s Crops International noted that, according to a Natural Marketing Institute 2021 study, consumers who chose gummies as their preferred supplement form increased significantly, by 137% from 2011 to 2020.
