A randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study published in the journal Nutrients showed that a natural extract of pomegranate fruit helped improve athletic performance and stamina for recreational and professional athletes of all ages.
Conducted by the Department of Exercise Physiology, San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia Spain with male amateur cyclists, they study demonstrated improvement in both sports performance and post-exercise recovery. The cross-over trial investigated if the pomegranate extract called Pomanox could improve peak performance of 26 trained cyclists after an exhaustive endurance trial.
The main outcomes showed that in two weeks (14 days) supplementation with Pomanox (from Euromed) significantly increased the time to exhaustion of trained cyclists and the time to reach a second ventilatory threshold (VT2) in a maximal test, after a long endurance effort, compared to a placebo. According to the authors, this showed that both maximal and submaximal performance increased. The physiological conditions of the test protocol were similar to those occurring in long-distance competitions, when participants decide to elevate their intensity in the final segment of a race, after a long submaximal effort. The intake of Pomanox may be particularly valuable when the objective is peak performance after a period of exercise.
“We are very pleased to see these promising results published though gold standard protocols, and at an established authoritative institution, as they provide further clear support for the efficacy and safety of our ingredients—in this instance, Pomanox,” said Andrea Zangara, scientific marketing manager at Euromed.
To be accessible to all types of active people, Euromed has made Pomanox available to manufacturers as certified organic, non-GMO, and water-soluble versions. As with Euromed’s botanical extracts, it is extracted by eco-friendly, water-only technologies (Pure-Hydro Process), and is free of residual solvents. Production is vertically integrated, and originates from selected fruit grown locally in Euromed’s Mediterranean region under strict and transparent quality control, and in close proximity to the manufacturing plant.
Euromed said its goal is to offer the highest quality botanical extracts that are ideal for inclusion in premium dietary supplements, functional foods, as well as in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
