Diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance, and unhealthy blood glucose levels are significant health issues impacting the global population. According to a 2016 report from the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 422 million adults around the world were living with diabetes in 2014, compared to just 108 million in 1980. The report also found that over the past decade the prevalence of diabetes has skyrocketed in low- and middle-income countries, contributing to 1.5 million deaths in 2012. Likewise, unhealthy blood sugar levels were linked to 2.2 million deaths, largely due to increased risk for cardiovascular disease, among other issues.
“The increasing incidence of diabetes, as well as complications correlating to poor blood sugar is likely due to an increase in the associated risk factors in individuals, such as being overweight or obese,” said James Komorowski, chief science officer, Nutrition 21, Purchase NY.
