Triarco Industries: Not Just Herbals
Industry supplier Triarco Industries, Wayne, NJ, has long been respected in the business as a quality supplier of herbal extracts. Yet the company’s ingredient portfolio goes way beyond botanicals, including a host of other ingredients across the supplement spectrum. Triarco remains committed to the herbals market, however, and has initiated a new program to raise the bar and continue to grow its herbals business.
The company was formed in 1978 and has continued to expand through the past two decades. In addition to its headquarters in Wayne, Triarco has an 80,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Paterson, NJ and a 56 acre campus with complete lab facilities, manufacturing and warehousing in Green Pond, SC.
The company’s new products portfolio continues to expand, with an average of one new product a month. “We have so much going on right now,” said president Rodger Rohde, Jr. “Each of our new products includes a website to go with it and we’re averaging 40,000 hits per month per website.” Among the newest products at the company are “Aminogen,” a patented enzyme that can liberate amino acids from protein-containing foods and help build muscle, “Serotain,” a full spectrum griffonia extract containing 5 HTP and other co-factors for serotonin production and “Cran-Stat,” a new standardized cranberry extract that helps stop E. Coli growth to help prevent urinary tract infections and aid prebiotic products in the gut.
In the company’s core herbal area, news centers around Triarco’s new “Benchmark Botanicals” line, which debuted at last month’s Expo West show. According to Mr. Rohde, the Benchmark Botanicals launch is the first time a company is rolling out a line of botanical powders that are fingerprinted with thin layer chromatography as well as standardized with HPLC. “There is a greater consistency to the product, providing great confidence to the customer,” said Mr. Rohde. Initially, the line will include 10 botanicals—red clover, saw palmetto, echinacea purporea and augustofolia, black cohosh, St. John’s Wort, Korean ginseng, valerian, kava kava and griffonia—with more to follow. “We’re raising the bar for competitors,” said Mr. Rohde. “There are companies that used to sell shoes that saw the potential in this business and decided to jump in. We hope this initiative will send them back to selling shoes.”
Triarco is also offering the Benchmark line in granulated form, which increases the density of the product, allowing more to be put into smaller capsules or allowing tableting of previously untabletable materials. “The raw material was not in a ‘ready to run’ format before,” said Mr. Rohde. “With our granulated products we’re changing that.”
Also changing at the company is the structure, which will be reorganized into divisions along product lines. The Benchmark Botanicals line will be formed into a botanicals division, while additional divisions will be a sports nutrition segment called Body Mechanics, a minerals area called Available Nutrients and an enzymes division called Interactive Enzymes.
Mr. Rohde commented on the latter. “Enzymes are an up and coming area. We believe there is a great opportunity here.” Triarco is launching a trademarked enzymes line—under the “Agree” name—within the next two months with GNC. The Agree line has a simple education component, said Mr. Rohde. “How many times have you heard someone say, ‘This food doesn’t agree with me’? Our products will be called ‘Agree with Dairy,’ ‘Agree with Fruits/Vegetables,’ etc. We’ve made it easy for consumers to understand,” he said. “It’s something that truly makes sense for consumers, who are dealing with more food-related problems as they get older.”
For the future, said Mr. Rohde, “Our growth will continue. Some companies may have slowed down, but we have the ability to grow in so many different segments depending on where the market is. We have a lot to offer our customers,” he said. —E.S.
