Brightseed has joined 92 companies currently participating in the Upcycled Food Association’s certified program. According to the company’s proprietary research, 60% of consumers feel strongly about upcycled ingredients, and this growing affinity is creating opportunities to innovate with new ingredients. Citing the Upcycled Food Association’s research, the upcycled category is expected to grow to $80 billion by 2032, Brightseed reported.
“Finally, companies can help mitigate food waste by participating in a straightforward, powerful program that turns food waste into new products and ingredients,” said Angie Crone, CEO of the Upcycled Food Association. “Cutting food waste is the single-most effective thing people can do to address climate change. Thanks to the roll-out of this set of clear, uniform standards and protocols, reducing food waste becomes much easier. It’s an innovative approach because it’s the first consumer product-based solution, making it highly scalable and economically sustainable.”
Hemp hulls are typically unused, and Bio Gut Fiber is made from them via a proprietary process with no added chemicals. It is the only fiber ingredient which contains N-trans-caffeoyltyramine (NCT) and N-trans-feruloyltyramine (NFT), two pre-clinically studied bioactives for gut support.
In a preclinical gut model study, these two compounds were evidenced to support gut barrier function by reducing permeability in the gut model. Gut barrier function is a component of digestive health by ensuring nutrient absorption and preventing toxins and pathogens from entering the bloodstream.
“We’re thrilled to demonstrate our commitment to offering high-quality, genuinely sustainable ingredients, validated by these certifications that consumers value and trust,” said Alina Slotnik, VP of bioactives at Brightseed. “Certifications like Upcycled Certified and Non-GMO Project Verified make sustainability more tangible and trusted for consumers who have growing expectations for the ingredients used in their favorite products. As we continue to bring bioactive ingredients into the market, it’s a priority for our products’ sustainability impact to match the health impact they provide to consumers.”
Brightseed will feature Bio Gut Fiber in a range of functional product concepts at SupplySide West. At the show, Bethany Henrick, Brightseed’s vice president of microbiome will participate in the education session, “A universe unfolding: uncovering the mysteries of the microbiome and its connection to health.”
Brightseed will be on hand during the show to meet with anyone interested in bioactives and Bio Gut Fiber, or anyone looking to formulate products for gut health, as well as to discuss its proprietary artificial intelligence platform, Forager, which is designed to discover new bioactives with potential human health benefits.
