FrieslandCampina Ingredients, an ingredient supplier specializing in proteins and prebiotics, announced the launch of Biotis Fermentis, a combination of whey protein, prebiotic galacto-oligosaccharides, and probiotic cultures which are all fermented together.
The combination is designed to enhance gut health in athletes and active consumers by modulating the composition of the gut microbiota. The new ingredient combines FrieslandCampina Ingredients’ expertise in proteins and prebiotics with the fermentation expertise of its parent company, FrieslandCampina, a 150-year-old producer of yogurt and cheese.
The new ingredient is suitable for protein powders and shakes, and can be positioned for both gut health and muscle health. The ingredients have also been linked to perceived improvements in physical well-being, including mood and energy levels.
The ingredient launched at the New Products Zone at Vitafoods Europe 2023, in Geneva, Switzerland. Visitors can request a sample and speak to experts about the ingredient’s market opportunities for performance and active nutrition solutions.
The Gut-Muscle Axis
Emerging scientific research is shedding light on the role of gut function in maintaining lean muscle mass and athletic performance. Of note, intense exercise, along with stress and dietary habits, is linked to gut issues which effect sports performance. 86% of elite athletes suffer from gastrointestinal issues believed to be associated with stressors such as training and competition.
Biotis GOS, which contains co-fermented whey protein and probiotics, is designed to target the gut-muscle axis and create a nutritional solution for athletes to maximize performance holistically. According to internal consumer research conducted by FrieslandCampina Ingredients, in a population of 150 recreational athletes between the ages of 20 and 50, three weeks of taking Biotis Fermentis daily resulted in 80% of users self-reporting improved satisfaction with physical well-being, and 60% of users reporting significantly reduced bloating compared to baseline levels.
“Until now, gut health and performance nutrition have largely been targeted as separate issues. But things often work better when they work together,” said Vicky Davies, global senior marketing director of performance and active nutrition at FrieslandCampina Ingredients. “That’s why we’ve focused on creating one synergistic solution to help athletes improve their performance and overall well-being. Fermentation is a complex and ancient process that transforms foods to provide gut support. By leveraging the power of fermentation, we can enhance the properties of both whey, pre- and probiotics to create a new, multi-dimensional approach that unlocks unique benefits for gut and muscle health.”
“With Biotis Fermentis, we’ve taken our expertise in both proteins and prebiotics and combined it with FrieslandCampina’s fermentation knowledge,” said Sophie Zillinger Molenaar, global marketing lead for Biotis at FrieslandCampina Ingredients. “The result is the transformation of specialist ingredients into a first-of-its-kind performance nutrition solution that activates the gut-muscle axis. This is the cutting-edge of nutritional science and the research we’ve carried out demonstrates this new ingredient’s efficacy. The opportunity is clear, by boosting overall well-being through improved gut health, brands can help athletes and active consumers get the most out of life, always.”
