Sabinsa, a supplier and manufacturer of ingredients for the nutraceutical and cosmeceutical industries, has crossed the 400-patent milestone. The company, founded in 1988 by Dr. Muhammed Majeed, now has more than 900 registered trademarks across the globe.
The most recent patents are from Australia, Japan, Canada, Europe, and the U.S. Sabinsa’s patent portfolio includes compositions, uses, and processes for brands such as BioPerine, Curcumin C3 Complex, LivLonga, LactoSpore, Sabroxy, and Curcumin C3 Reduct.
While many of the branded ingredients manufactured by the Sami-Sabinsa Group are used in dietary supplements, many have cosmetic applications, such as Proscalpin, LactoSporin, SabiWhite. Newer patented ingredients include Cirpusins, WithanAlpha, CurCousin, and Saberry.
“I’m extremely proud that the Sami-Sabinsa R&D team has demonstrated both scientific rigor and imagination in expanding my vision of using modern research to unlock new aspects of the wisdom of Ayurveda for so many decades,” said Majeed. “Our innovation backed by science will continue to bring out trusted brands with IP creation and protection, intertwined in our business model.”
Sabinsa’s very first patent, U.S. patent 5536506, was issued in 1996, for its black pepper extract BioPerine, which was awarded for improving the gastrointestinal absorption of nutrients. The ingredient is standardized to contain 95% piperine, which is a bioenhancer of nutrients by facilitating higher absorption, and it has been the subject of 63 clinical studies. The ingredient has received six U.S. patents since for further use indications, and is used in other branded ingredients including Metabolicgard, WithanAlpha, Nigellin, and LivLonga.
Sabinsa’s efforts to identify bioavailable curcuminoids led to the development of Curcumin C3 Reduct, which was recently approved by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as a novel food. The ingredient contains the more bioavailable form of curcuminoids, tetrahydrocurcuminoids, which are reductive metabolites.
Sabroxy is a patented extract of Oroxylum indicum bark, standardized to a unique set of compounds including oroxylin-A, baicalein, and chrysin. Sabroxy is formulated to support cognitive function, memory, concentration, focus and recall in healthy people. The ingredient was issued patent in the US, US11458117, for inhibiting the activity and expression of β-secretase, the causative enzyme for build-up of amyloid plaques on the neurons. The antioxidant properties of the ingredient are also thought to help recover damaged neuronal mitochondrial health by sustaining oxidative chain in neurons.
Proscalpin is a patented herbal hair care product comprising Cococin (Cocos Nucifera liquid endosperm), Saberry (Emblica Officinalis fruit extract), and PeptiSeLect (a selenium-containing peptide extracted from garlic), is formulated to prevent hair fall and promote hair growth.
In the skincare market, Sabinsa offers a reduced curcumin metabolite branded as SabiWhite, which when combined with Ethyl ascorbic acid, a stable vitamin C variant, synergistically improves cosmetic benefits by inhibiting melanogenesis and has been patented in the U.S. and several other jurisdictions.
ProScalpin and SabiWhite, each earned Sabinsa recognition from the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India with the “Cosmetic Ingredients Manufacturer of the Year” award in 2022.
Recent patented brands also include, WithanAlpha, a composition comprising Withania somnifera extract, Mucuna pruriens extract, Coleus forskohlii, Kaempferia parviflora extract and BioPerine, patented in the U.S. for supporting male sexual function and libido. In addition, Cirpusins (Cyperus rotundus extract to manage body weight), CurCousin (Calebin A for management of metabolic health), and DigeZyme (an enzyme blend, to aid digestion and absorption of nutrients) have been patented in the U.S. and several other jurisdictions. Sabinsa’s flagship probiotic LactoSpore received numerous patent grants worldwide for a range of health indications.
