U.S. News & World Report revealed its annual rankings of the Best Diets. With an updated methodology, the 2023 rankings examined 24 diets to help people find a diet that can help meet their goals.
For the sixth consecutive year, the Mediterranean Diet took the No. 1 spot for the Best Diet Overall for its emphasis on fruits, vegetables, olive oil, and fish and a focus on diet quality rather than a single nutrient or food group.
The Mediterranean Diet also claimed the top spot in Best Diets for Bone and Joint Health (tied with DASH Diet), Best Family-Friendly Diets (tied with Flexitarian), Best Diets for Healthy Eating, and Best Plant-Based Diets.
Two National Institute of Health-supported diets, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC), together earned five No. 1 spots in U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 rankings.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH, researched, developed and tested both diets. Of 24 diets evaluated, DASH, which supports overall heart health and helps lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, ranked first in the Best Heart-Healthy Diets, Best Diets for Diabetes, and Best Diets for Bone & Joint Health categories.
DASH also tied with the Flexitarian Diet for second-best overall diet. The MIND Diet—which stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay—ranked fourth and TLC rounded out the top five diets overall.
TLC, which focuses on lowering cholesterol, ranked first in the Easiest Diets to Follow (tied with Flexitarian) and Best Family-Friendly Diets categories (tied with Mediterranean and Flexitarian). To receive top rankings, a diet must be nutritious, safe, easy to follow, effective for weight loss, and protective against diabetes and heart disease.
