Bone is living, growing tissue. It undergoes continuous remodeling during one’s lifetime, with constant formation of new bone and resorption of old bone. The balance between bone formation and bone loss changes after peak bone mass is reached. More bone is lost than the new bone is formed. Usually, men and women have the same speed of bone loss in mid-life. Women can lose up to 20 percent or more of their bone mass in the five to seven years after menopause.
