Kid’s Nutrition Grows Up

June 22, 2016

New product offerings support childhood nutrition at various stages of development.

Parents Know Best

For many parents, promoting and instilling proper nutritional habits in their kids is a top priority. As a result, supplements, functional foods and beverages targeting children in infancy through their teenage years are popping up on grocery store and pharmacy shelves.

Here’s a look at several recent new product offerings designed to support the unique nutritional needs of growing bodies and minds.

Carlson Labs Launches Baby’s DHA

Omega-3 DHA supports healthy brain, vision and nervous system development in growing children and is especially important during their first two years, as their brains nearly double in size. Because many infants don’t get adequate amounts of DHA through breastfeeding or formula alone, Carlson Labs, Arlington Heights, IL, developed Baby’s DHA to fill this nutritional gap and ensure children receive the high-quality DHA their growing bodies and brains need. Baby’s DHA provides up to 1,100 mg of omega-3s and 400 IU of vitamin D3 per serving. Dosing is based on an infant’s body weight and can be easily measured and administered with the included syringe.

Carlson Labs sources high quality Norwegian Arctic cod using traditional, sustainable methods. The same day the fish are caught, they’re transported to a Norwegian facility for processing and purification. Baby’s DHA is bottled with a touch of natural vitamin E to prevent oxidation and is tested by an independent, FDA-registered laboratory for freshness, potency and purity.

“This product is great for moms who have difficulty providing their babies with the DHA they need for optimal health,” said Carlson Labs President Carilyn Anderson. “And with its convenient syringe, dosing is easier than ever.”

Little Remedies Launches Probiotic Plus Electrolytes

Prestige Brands, Inc., Tarrytown, NY, has developed Little Remedies Probiotic Plus Electrolytes, which combines a probiotic and electrolytes in one convenient packet designed specifically for babies. The natural berry flavor powder dissolves easily in fluids and provides the dual benefit of maintaining flora (good bacteria) in the digestive system and supporting hydration.

“Little Remedies Probiotic Plus Electrolytes is the first complete solution for parents to help support their baby's digestive health and hydration with a probiotic and electrolytes in one convenient packet,” said Barry Cohen, director of innovation at Prestige Brands. “Probiotic Plus Electrolytes is the newest innovation in pediatric care and like all of Little Remedies' baby focused products, was created with ingredients that are safe and reliable especially for a baby's gentle body."

According to the company, Little Remedies Probiotic Plus Electrolytes is the only option on the market that has the proprietary dual chamber pouch technology, which enables a specially formulated electrolyte that complies with the World Health Organization guidelines to be combined with a probiotic. This is important because electrolytes, when stored with probiotics, will interact with the probiotics and impede the probiotic's ability to survive during shelf life, making them useless.

The product features Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, containing 5 billion colony-forming units.

Culturelle Kids Regularity Gentle-Go Formula Addresses Children’s Regularity

In a recent study of U.S. mothers with young children, over 60% of those surveyed identified the physical and emotional issues of occasional regularity as a top concern. To help address this specific digestive issue, Culturelle Kids Regularity Gentle-Go Formula was developed, combining good-for-you bacteria with dietary fiber sourced from kiwi and chicory root.

Each packet of the new child-specific product contains 2.5 billion active cultures of Lactobacillus GG with 3.5 grams—or five prunes worth—of dietary fiber to restore the natural balance of gut bacteria in the digestive tract and promote daily regularity.

“Parents typically call the minute their child’s bathroom routine becomes inconsistent, so having an option like Culturelle Kids Regularity Gentle-Go Formula to turn to at a moment’s notice will provide a great solution,” said Dr. Jennifer Trachtenberg, pediatrician and mother. “By adding fiber and a proven beneficial probiotic to their child’s routine, parents can breath a sigh of relief knowing their children's digestive health can easily get back on track.”

“Our research has shown that kids’ regularity is a top concern for parents, in particular when transitioning their toddler to solid foods,” explained Nicole Bourdeau, senior brand manager for Culturelle Kids, part of i-Health, Inc./Culturelle, Cromwell, CT. “And as a brand parents trust with their children’s digestive health, we felt we had a responsibility to offer an easy to use, drug-free option.”

Each sugar-, dairy- and gluten-free serving of Culturelle Kids Regularity Gentle-Go Formula comes in a flavorless packet, making it easy to mix into a child’s favorite cold- or room-temperature snack such as milk or apple sauce. The product is safe for children one year and older.

Sprout Organic Foods, Montvale, NJ, expanded its organic baby and toddler food line with the addition of 15 new purees and snacks, including the category's first quinoa-based puff and ancient grain-based crisp products.

The launch taps into burgeoning consumer interest in clean eating, honest labeling, and promotion of lifelong healthy eating habits by exposing children to a broad variety of foods at an early age. It also builds on continuing 10-12% growth in the organic baby/toddler food sector.

The Sprout products introduced included 10 new Stage 1 and 2 baby food purees featuring combinations of whole fruits, vegetables and grains, as well as the first quinoa and ancient grain-based snacks in the baby/toddler food category.
