The list of vitamin and mineral substances identified in the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Annex II to Directive 2002/46/EC, has been officially amended to include Quatrefolic, the glucosamine salt of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid. The ingredient may now used in the manufacture of food supplements sold inside of the EU.
This is the result of a positive Scientific Opinion issued by EFSA on September 11th 2013, which determined (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid glucosamine salt is a source of folate that is a safe and beneficial for inclusion in nutritional food supplements.
(6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid glucosamine salt was classified as a novel food ingredient by Commission Implementing Decision 2014/154/EU, released on March 19th 2014.
