Danisco has launched OsmoAid its own brand of lactitol, a disaccharide sugar alcohol that has been shown to promote gut mobility in constipated individuals. Unlike conventional laxatives, which can be harsh, OsmoAid works gently by lowering colonic pH and stimulating peristalsis (the rippling and wave-like motions that contract and relax the bowel muscles); and increasing the osmotic pressure in the intestinal lumen, resulting in an increase in fecal volume. A six-week study has shown that constipated subjects experienced an increase in bowel movements and preferred the use of OsmoAid over other harsh cathartics. Overall, OsmoAid was reported to be well tolerated versus other osmotic laxatives with minimal side effects such as flatulence, rumblings, wind, abdominal cramps or nausea. Depending on individual needs and age, OsmoAid is best taken orally between 150 mg and 40 grams/day and can be ingested by all age groups without any health concerns, according to the company.
