GMP Letters Sent to FDA by Members of Congress
In late June, members of Congress sent letters to FDA urging that GMPs be issued for supplements. The letters stated strong support for the ongoing effort to establish GMPs, and even went as far as to say that they “hope that dietary supplement GMPs will be finalized and ready to implement before the beginning of fall.” They also said while they are pleased to see this Administration take a more active role to use the authority established under DSHEA, they feel finalizing the GMPs is an essential element of an effective regulatory program for dietary supplements and would be another important step in this Administration’s effort to more aggressively implement DSHEA.
In reaction to the letters, the Council for Responsible Nutrition’s (Washington, D.C.) president & CEO, Steven Mister, said, “We appreciate that Congress is getting involved because responsible companies understand the importance of the final GMP rule to ensure quality across the board for consumers and to level the playing field for industry. We recognize that FDA has taken important steps in the past few years to more fully implement DSHEA; however, GMPs are a priority that can’t wait any longer.”
