Eating foods rich in vitamin D during pregnancy could reduce a child's risk of developing allergies by up to 25%, according to a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
A team of scientists from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai evaluated 1,248 mothers and their children in the U.S. Study participants were followed from the first trimester of pregnancy until the children reached the age of seven.
Women who had a higher-intake of foods rich in vitamin D during pregnancy were less likely to have children that developed allergies by school age, the study found.
However, the study noted that ingesting vitamin D through a supplement did not reduce the risk of the child developing allergies.
