Source: Eur Heart J, April 21, 2009 [Epub ahead of print]
Research: For this study, researchers conducted a population-based, prospective study of 39,367 middle-aged and older Swedish men, ages 45-79. Diet was measured using food-frequency questionnaires and men were followed for HF through Swedish inpatient and cause-of-death registers from January 1998 through December 2004.
Results: During this period, 597 men with no history of heart disease or diabetes developed heart failure-34 died from the disorder. In this population, researchers found that moderate intake (once a week) of fatty fish and marine omega 3 fatty acids were 12% less likely to develop HF, though the association for fish intake was not statistically significant. Higher intake of fish or omega 3 fatty acids was not associated with additional benefit.
