Nutramax Laboratories, Inc., Edgewood, MD, has announced the results of an in vitro study providing further evidence that the combination of FCHG49 glucosamine hydrochloride and TRH122 low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate, as found in CosaminDS, protects joint health. Also noted were the potential benefits of the compounds' use in people with healthy cartilage.
The study, published in the July issue of the American Journal of Veterinary Research, mimicked cartilage conditions when a joint is under stress, as previous studies have done, but cultured the cartilage for 2 weeks, a longer period of time than most other studies had used. Results showed that the glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, at concentrations comparable to those able to be obtained in the body, were effective at inhibiting expression of agents involved in cartilage breakdown and at stimulating cartilage production. The study then went a step further and demonstrated that the glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate combination was also effective under normal cartilage conditions, which provides a rationale for administration in healthy individuals.
