Tommy Thompson announced in December that he would be stepping down as the Secretary of Health & Human Services (HHS). During this announcement, Secretary Thompson said he would like to see Congress review the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) and consider its revision, according to the National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA), Washington, D.C. His sentiments stem from having to remove ephedra from the market early last year. He commented that the process of removing an “unsafe” ingredient like ephedra is long and drawn out. As such, he feels that FDA should not have the burden of proving that dietary supplements are unsafe.
Mike Leavitt, the former Governor of Utah, has been named as Secretary Thompson’s successor. According to LDI Group, Inc., Salt Lake City, UT, this bodes well for the supplement industry, as he is well informed on several supplement issues and has a favorable attitude toward their use.
