A Virginia company has created the first prescription nutritional supplement that contains omega-3, touted as a potential treatment for everything from heart disease to depression. The supplement, known as Animi-3, is made up of omega-3, folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. It was developed by Gordonsville-based PBM Pharmaceuticals. The ingredients in Animi-3 can be found in over-the-counter supplements. But Jack Schramm, executive vice president of PBM, said that in Animi-3, contaminants such as mercury, sometimes found in fish oil rich in omega-3, have been removed. Schramm said Animi-3 requires a prescription because of its large amounts of folic acid. “The high levels of folic acid may be helpful in bringing down the risk factors for heart attacks,” he said.
