At the request of FDA, the Food and Nutrition Board’s Committee on the Framework for Evaluating the Safety of Dietary Supplements of the National Academies is in the process of developing a proposed framework for evaluating the safety of dietary supplement ingredients marketed in the U.S. The framework will include criteria for categorizing and prioritizing dietary supplement ingredients with regard to safety issues. The committee will also propose a system of scientific reviews for evaluating the safety of dietary supplement ingredients and will provide sample prototypes using this system.
On October 11, the committee was supposed to hold a session soliciting information relevant to the framework. The proposed framework is expected to be released for comment in 2002.
In other FDA news, the agency will conduct a telephone survey of 2000 randomly selected adults on their usage of dietary supplements. The Health & Diet Survey will be designed to determine consumers’ prevalence, experience and purposes of use of dietary supplements, knowledge of health benefits and risks, regulation of dietary supplements, sources of dietary supplement information and perceptions of dietary supplement labels.
