Senators Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) recently introduced the Dietary Supplement Tax Fairness Act (S. 1330) to Congress. The bill would provide a tax break for consumers of dietary supplements, medical foods and other foods for special dietary uses by amending the internal revenue code. The tax code currently only offers relief if products are prescribed by a physician. In addition, the senators stipulate that in order to qualify for the tax break a supplement must be produced by a company employing good manufacturing practices.
