Four nutraceutical ingredient suppliers recently received GRAS status for their ingredients. The FDA has completed its review of Columbia, MD-based Martek Biosciences’ GRAS (generally recognized as safe) notification and informed the company that it has no questions regarding the company’s conclusion that Martek’s DHASCO® and ARASCO® oil blend is GRAS when used in specified ratios in infant formulas. Infant formulas containing Martek’s oil will become available in the U.S. as soon as infant formula manufacturers satisfy FDA’s pre-market notification procedures relating to infant formula.
In other news, Modesto, CA-based Dry Creek Nutrition’s ActiVin® grape seed has received GRAS approval by the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association (FEMA). To date ActiVin is the only grape seed extract to go through this review process to secure GRAS status.
In addition, lutein supplier Kemin Foods, Des Moines, IA, has gained GRAS status for its FloraGlo® lutein product. Kemin now plans to break into the functional foods market.
Finally, ChitoClear™ chitosan materials from Primex, Avaldsnes, Norway, reently achieved GRAS status. The material comes from the shells of the Pandalus borealis shrimp.
