The award recognizes Zapp’s decades of leadership advancing quality and analytical competence, and providing high-quality ingredients.

UNPA, a trade group representing the dietary supplements and natural health products industries, honored Loretta Zapp, CEO of Applied Food Sciences (AFS) with the ‘Queen of Quality’ award at its member meeting during Expo West.

The award recognizes Zapp for decades spent in leadership positions advancing quality and analytical competence, and providing high-quality ingredients for the dietary supplements industry.

Zapp established AFS in 2001 to supply novel functional ingredients with organic farming, ethical sourcing, and sustainable practices. AFS incorporates both USP and AOAC validated methods for specific compound identification, and isotope testing to ensure there is no synthetic adulteration.

Prior to AFS, Zapp led Industrial Laboratories, Inc., a third-party testing lab where she grew the company into a globally recognized analytical laboratory that set standards for dietary supplement regulations.

While at Industrial Laboratories, Zapp founded the Institute for Nutraceutical Advancement (INA), raising funds from the industry to work with the government to provide validated testing methods for a variety of dietary ingredients. INA was purchased by NSF in 2001, with the goal of incorporating INA’s methods validation program into its dietary supplement certification program.

After her tenure at Industrial Laboratories, Zapp served as president and CEO of Oncology Sciences Corporation (OSC), an early-stage cancer drug development company that became the foundation of AFS.

Zapp’s passion lies in ingredient innovation and discovery, reports UNPA, with an emphasis on ethical sourcing and social responsibility, and connecting people to the products they consume.

“Loretta is a force in this industry that is unmatched when it comes to quality. She sets the standard for businesses that want to be successful in the dietary supplement industry and has stayed true to that mission for more than two decades,” said Loren Israelsen, President, UNPA. “It is a great honor to give her this award, as she stands for all the right things when it comes to producing the highest quality ingredients for this industry.”
