Givaudan has launched Zensera, a lemon balm extract evidenced to support calmness and cognitive performance under stress, according to Givaudan’s data which is pending publication.

The ingredient is formulated for a daily 300 mg dose, has excellent solubility, light taste and color, and is suitable for clean-label formulations like select beverages.

“Givaudan is dedicated to helping our customers meet the wellness needs of consumers with rigorously researched natural ingredients,” said Timothée Olagne, head of marketing of health and functional solutions at Givaudan. “With 70% of adults in the U.S. feeling overwhelmed by work and daily responsibilities, and 30% struggling to take action when stressed, Zensera provides brands with a unique opportunity to support consumers when stress gets in the way.”

Zensera was developed through a compound screening and is made using a patent-pending process for maximum effectiveness and applicability. In a randomized clinical trial, 106 moderately stressed but otherwise healthy subjects were given either 300 mg of Zensera or a placebo. After performing tasks designed to simulate a stressful day, the results showed significant differences in cognitive performance, in areas such as attention, alertness, focus, and problem solving, compared to placebo, according to the company.

Givaudan will be showcasing Zensera at Vitafoods 2025, including during a presentation “A New Approach to Stress Management” at the New Ingredients Theater on Monday, May 21 at 4:30 p.m. Givaudan experts will be available to speak more about the ingredient during the event.
