New Developments At USP
USP recently released its standard of quality for choline chloride and choline bitartrate, two common forms of choline used in processed food fortification. The USP 25-NF 20 monographs contain specifications (test, procedures and acceptance criteria) that help assure the identity, strength, quality and purity of named items. Currently, Balchem Encapsulates, Slate Hill, NY, is the only manufacturer that meets USP grade standards for both choline chloride and choline bitartrate.
In other news, Pharmavite Corp., Northridge, CA, makers of Nature Made® vitamins, minerals and other dietary supplements, will become the first participant in USP’s Dietary Supplementation Program (DSVP). The DSVP verification mark will appear on product labels once the certification process is complete. During certification, USP analyzes both the product and the manufacturing facility for the quality and integrity of its ingredients and will ensure continued compliance with DSVP standards by conducting random tests after the mark has been granted.
Finally, USP has agreed to test children’s chewable multivitamins that will be used in The Healthy Foundation’s Congressionally funded research program. The Healthy Foundation research program, which will begin later this year, will measure the improvement in academic performance and behavior in several thousand at-risk schoolchildren who will be given a low dose vitamin/mineral supplement.
